About Us

The Hunt of a Lifetime is Waiting for You at The Double J Ranch.

Double J Ranch offers some of the best hunting in South Texas. Abundant miles of red sand, cactus, and mesquites; among producing large trophy bucks! Our goal is to continue to offer our hunters the opportunity to hunt and harvest a truly exceptional trophy South Texas buck!

The atmosphere here in this part of South Texas is unique, from its breathtaking sunsets to its abundance of wildlife.

With locations in Dimmit County between Cotulla and Big Wells, Texas. And another in Medina County, where we offer hunting in Castroville and Hondo. Generations of the largest whitetail ever raised can be found here at the Double J Ranch. High fenced to maintain the genetic integrity of our deer herd and under a strict management plan. Our habitat management includes shredding, discing, food plots, and water distribution.

Dimmit County, known as the Golden Triangle of South Texas, is recognized for producing large trophy bucks and has a record for bucks taken each year. Medina County is in the transition zone between South Texas and the Hill Country and parts of the ranch resemble South Texas although there’s a vast majority of large oak and cedar trees – we are blessed with the rolling hills and the deep brushy draws.

Wildlife: Home to some of the best quality white-tailed deer in the state. Through sound wildlife and habitat management, supplemented with superior, typical genetics, trophy white-tailed bucks are harvested annually. Sightings of turkey, bobwhite quail, dove, javelina, feral hogs, coyotes, bobcats, and an abundance of non-game species can also be found on the land. But more importantly, of course, BIG DEER will make your hunt here a unique South Texas experience.

Terrain: Excellent diversity of native South Texas brush including mesquite, guajillo, blackbrush, coma, brazil, guayacan, granjeno, persimmon, twisted acacia, and prickly pear. The topography of the land is relatively flat to slightly undulating with dominant soil types of Duval and Poteet fine sandy loam mixed with some Tiocano clay. This red sandy loam provides excellent forage growth of native grasses and forbs, highly desired for bobwhite quail and dove.

A True Pioneer of our Texas Hunting Heritage – Jerry Johnston

TTHA Premier Publication, Fall 1978

A young Jerry Johnston, Jan 1959

As a youngster, hunting and fishing were high priorities for Jerry Johnston. He grew up on the land and enjoyed hunting the South Texas terrain. Jerry’s love for the outdoors still stands true today! He has always had a passion for deer hunting and the believes that the white-tailed deer is the No. 1 game animal in Texas. In 1975, he made a long-time dream a reality, and created a state-wide association that celebrated this passion. He named the organization Texas Trophy Hunters Association and its first magazine, Texas Hunters Hotline, was published in 1975. Over the years, TTHA has earned the reputation for being one of the most respected wildlife hunting organizations in Texas and has continued to increase its membership nationally.

Jerry’s continuing efforts to engage both adults and youth into deer hunting and the outdoors of Texas, places him on a list of honorary Texans known as Pioneers of our Texas Hunting Heritage. His contributions to the hunting culture and heritage in Texas has been unexcelled within the state’s long hunting history.
